Just starting out? This six-class course is designed to help you learn the basics of riding and horsemanship. Each two-hour class features a horsemanship lesson, help tacking and untacking your horse, and a group riding lesson.
In the Horsemanship portion you’ll learn how to halter, lead, and safely secure your horse, as well as how to groom, tack-up, and untack. Additional knowledge will include points of the horse, parts of the saddle and bridle, and care and feeding. As well as your four in-person classes, you’ll receive two bonus online class discussion sessions.
In the Riding portion you will learn how to mount and dismount safely. You’ll begin with walk and halt, and move to trotting by the end of your first month. As you progress within the level you’ll add skills such as single-handed reining, handling long objects such as swords and whips, and trotting over and through obstacles.
Students can expect to be ready to assess Horsemanship Level 1 at the end of the month. Readiness for Riding Level 1 typically takes three iterations of the course.
Riders who have passed Horsemanship Level 1 and are comfortable tacking up on their own may register for the Riding portion only.
